Meet the Skater – Freaky Deaky
Freaky Deaky is a new skater to the Bombshell Brawlers this year after graduating through WRDL’s Fresh Meat program only a year ago. She has grown as a skater and is ready to be one of the main jammers at the Confusion Corner Chaos tournament on June 25 and 26 at the Fort Garry Curling Club in Winnipeg. See more details about the tournament here.
How did you discover roller derby?
I heard about roller derby from a friend when we were 17. I used to be a synchronized skater and really missed having a structured program to skate. I figured I’d give roller derby a shot a couple of years later!
What do you love about being on the Bombshell Brawlers?
I love being part of the team! Everyone is friendly and wants to see each other succeed. I’ve only just become a Bombshell Brawler, but it already feels weird playing against my own team mates during home team games and scrimmages!
What position do you most enjoy playing on the Bombshell Brawlers and why?
I enjoy playing as any position, really, but I’m a jammer for the Brawlers. Jamming is fun but a lot of hard work since you’re essentially sprinting through a group of people with a giant target on your head yelling “hit me!” I’m always thankful for the blockers on my team!
What event are you most looking forward to this season and why?
I was really excited to play in the Block Party Tournament in Whitewood, SK from June 4th to 5th. It was my first full travel weekend tournament and also my birthday weekend!
What advice do you have for people who want to join Roller Derby?
Take the plunge! Roller derby is a large time commitment and can be a bit pricey but it’s a lot of fun, great exercise, and great for team building skills. Personally, I got very excited before I even started WRDL’s Fresh Meat program, so I bought all the gear and skated outside all summer. For the record, skating outside is 10 times harder than it needs to be!
