Meet the Skater – Foxy
Foxy is one of the captains of the 2016 Bombshell Brawlers. She’s ready to push the team to new levels this season and move them up in the Canadian rankings. The Brawlers’ next challenge is the Confusion Corner Chaos tournament in Winnipeg on June 25th and 26th at the Fort Garry Curling Club. See more details about the tournament here.
How did you discover roller derby?
In 2006, I started watching a show called Rollergirls, which was all about the Texas Roller Derby. After the first episode I was hooked! Unfortunately, I couldn’t commit to anything because of my job and Winnipeg didn’t have a roller derby league then.
A couple years later I saw a WRDL poster while getting my hair done. As soon as I got home I volunteered for that bout and signed up for fresh meat right away. That was 2010 and I’ve been playing ever since!
What do you love about being on the Bombshell Brawlers?
Where do I begin? There are so many things! Most of all, I love my teammates!!! They push me to be the best captain, trainer, and skater that I can be and they are such a supportive, positive, strong group of women to be around!
What position do you most enjoy playing on the Bombshell Brawlers and why?
I love playing pivot because I like to be a leader on the track. Being pivot also allows me to play a bit of every position—I get to block AND I get a little bit of jamming in there too, even though jamming scares the crap out of me!
What event are you most looking forward to this season and why?
I’m really looking forward to our Confusion Corner Chaos Tournament. There are a lot of great teams coming out and it’s nice to play at home with your friends, family, and fans cheering you on!
What advice do you have for people who want to check out or join roller derby?
Do it! It will change your life! Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever thought my body would be capable of the things it does when I’m on skates.
Roller derby has given me the confidence and strength to push myself in all aspects of my life, and I’m happier and healthier than I’ve ever been! Plus I’ve made some pretty amazing friends throughout this journey.
