Winnipeg’s First WFTDA Officiating Clinic
Without our officials, roller derby wouldn’t exist. They’re the ones wearing stripes or pink on the sidelines making sure everything runs as smoothly as possible. From tracking points, to issuing penalties, to time keeping, officials make sure every game is a well-oiled machine.
The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) hosts Officiating Clinics every year for officials across the WFTDA network to receive additional training and resources. These clinics do so much to help officials gain knowledge and improve their skills so they can do the best job possible officiating games for skaters from all WFTDA leagues.
This year, Winnipeg was the only Canadian city selected to host one of these clinics on August 13 and 14!
Meet Our Instructors
Winnipeg is welcoming two veteran instructors, Sugar Daddy, formally of Gotham Girls Roller Derby and Philly Roller Derby, and Intejill from Boston Roller Derby.
Sugar Daddy has held the Risk Management Chair, been the Tournament Head Referee for the WFTDA Championships, been a long time instructor, and is one of the most well respected and overall nicest officials in derby.
Intejill has been on Certification Oversight and the Tournament Head Non-Skating Official for multiple playoffs. She’s known for being tough as nails but quick to laugh!
Burger and a Beer
As a part of this event, the Winnipeg Roller Derby League is also hosting a Burger and a Beer fundraising event at Shannon’s Irish Pub on Saturday, August 13 at 6:30 p.m. Spend some time with WRDL skaters and officials and join us! Tickets are $15 for a burger (vegan options available), fries or salad, and a drink (domestic beer, non-premium liquor, or non-alcoholic).
A big thank you to everyone from the Winnipeg Roller Derby League and the WFTDA for helping put this event together! We are excited to see you all in Winnipeg this weekend!
